America's Boating Course

Many states now require safe boating training for those born after some specific date to qualify to operate a boat on their waters.  Kansas and Missouri, in particular, both have such a requirement.  While there are competing offers for the student to choose from, the Sail and Power Squadrons, collectively, are the oldest and most respected safe boating organization in the country.

Our two states accept certification from an online course or an instructor-led course.  The Sail and Power Squadrons offer both.  Click here for more information

In either case, Power Squadron courses require the student to pass a proctored examination to qualify for a certificate of completion.

There is some controversy as to whether online courses offer the depth of education that an instructor-led course can offer.  Students can ask an instructor questions as they come to mind, and in the case of the Kansas City Sail and Power Squadron, that instructor will have extensive on-water experience in either a sail or a power boat, and in many cases in both.  Although the United States Power Squadrons does offer online courses to serve popular demand, it is the official position of the national body and The Kansas City Sail and Power Squadron that instructor-led courses provide a better learning experience and a stronger foundation for further education.
